V.I. Travel Team     (9/4/2009)
by Kevin Manahan

As you may be aware, in early August a proposal was put forward to the Vancouver Island Field Lacrosse League to create a travel team that would be in addition to regular league play. The proposal was accepted by VIFL and also approved by BCLA. The VI Travel Team was a collaborative proposal put forward by Kevin Manahan, VYFL, Gord Cawthorne, NYFL and Alton Davis, PacRim Youth Field Lacrosse. The VI Travel Team will be focused on the Grade 5/6 and 7/8 groups to correspond with the age groups in the United States. Goals: 1. The mission of the Travel Team program is to give Vancouver Island athletes the exposure and playing experience they require to compete at the highest level available. 2. The Travel Team will be a collaboration of players from all island associations where athletes are recommended by their coaches. The collaboration is expected to advance the field programs on the Island. 3. It is our goal to develop players through a challenging environment and, as a result, field lacrosse may be used as a tool to open doors for athletes in the future and allow for a transition into high school programs such as Claremont, Charles Best and Pac Sport. Anticipated Schedule / Travel Commitments: Practices: 2 per month commencing September 2009 and ending January 2010. Locations will rotate as available through the Island to accommodate travel of all athletes. Tournaments: The Selects team is currently proposing two travels dates: October 24, 25, 2009 – Portland, Oregon January 16, 17, 2010 – San Diego, California Adrenaline Challenge Cost: Start up costs for players is $200.00 and will include uniforms, tournament fees, field charges and misc items that may be required. Any funds received beyond what is required will be returned to player families. The cost of travel is the responsibility of each family but may be offset through fund raising efforts. Commitment: Coaching staff will only consider players that are 100% committed to both the practice and game schedules. Every effort will be made to reduce scheduling conflicts with home associations but coaching staff will not consider additional sports. For VI Travel Team practices, the commitment made to the home association comes first. For the tournaments, the VI Travel Team will not conflict with the playoff season or provincial competition. Next Steps: By September 9 please return the following information by email to Kevin Manahan at 67irish@telus.net: 1. Your top players in the birth years 98/99 and birth years 96/97 (grade 5/6 and grade 7/8). Numbers per organization are not restricted but please remember that we will only submit one team per division and selections will be made based on attitude, game knowledge and skills. 2. Primary position played, secondary position played and what hand the player shoots. 3. Approval from parent to participate. 4. Endorsement from previous coach indicating coachability, teamwork, positive attitude, and commitment. If a player is unable to get an endorsement please provide a brief explanation. 5. To ensure a return of information by September 9, please forward this email to your coaching staff and parents for consideration as soon as possible. Try Out time: Try outs dates will be communicated to players in early September. For additional information please contact Kevin Manahan by emails at 67irish@telus.net or by telephone at 250 474-1669. Thank you, Kevin.
